Inspiration Begun in May 2017, ArtBreak Studio was inspired by similar programs throughout the country. With a well-established program for people currently experiencing homelessness in Ann Arbor, the enthusiasm to provide a program in this community was an easy fit with the Robert J. Delonis Center. The studio is a supportive, safe, and welcoming space where once-a-week art instruction and the freedom to create is paramount.
Mission The mission of ABS is provide those experiencing homelessness and other disadvantaged populations an opportunity for creative self-expression in a supportive educational environment. Our format inspires fellowship, creativity, self-confidence and hope. We believe that art is inside everyone, and that the ability to express oneself creatively is a significant factor in enhancing self-esteem and supporting mental health. We are non-profit, dependent on local resources of the art enthusiasts, volunteers and donors. We allow people to establish their own direction, pace, and depth of self-exploration. Besides offering encouragement and a non-judgmental presence, ABS facilitators interact honestly, respect and adapt to each participant’s needs, maintain boundaries, and emphasize the creative experience.
A Community Effort ArtBreak Studio is a community effort! The three originators engaged a group of interested volunteers who helped develop and plan the programs. The Ann Arbor Women Artists organization has been most generous in providing us with many talented volunteers to plan and execute lessons every week. Assistants need not have any artistic experience and can enjoy the learning process as well! We welcome anyone in the community to participate in making ArtBreak Studio a success. See our Volunteer page to learn more.
Our first year was a huge success! Several of our participants told us it was “the favorite part of my week.” Collectively, we completed a 40-canvas mural that now graces the reception area at the Delonis Center. We also had a month-long exhibit during Art Fair at the County Administration Building, and received a special Proclamation of Appreciation from the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners. In addition, we got some nice press in CivCity, and a short cameo on WEMU radio! To keep up with our activities and see what our clients are creating, visit our Facebook page.
